March is over and I have survived!

Sakuracon and LA were both really fun.

Time to get back to work! Should be back on LiveStream more regularly on weekday afternoons. As always, I will post to Facebook and Twitter, but only on DA during the weekends.

I'm on right now though, doing some chibi drawings from Sakuracon.

It's SO nice to be home.

There are 31 days in March.

I am traveling for 18 of them.

No, really - this is going to be a CRAZY month. I have a ski trip (fun!) during which I need to make 40-50 small plushies for Sakuracon at the end of the month.

YAY SAKURACON! I will be there!! There is going to be a raffle to win a plush head of any character. THIS IS GREAT. I will tell you more about where I will be if and when I find out.

But after I get back from my ski trip and BEFORE I go to Seattle, I am going to Los Angeles because....

MY KORRA PLUSH IS IN A SHOW IN LA!

I am seriously so excited about this, and I cannot wait to go. The show is at the PixelDrip Gallery. They have a Facebook page for the opening which is on March 23rd at 11AM. If you live in or around LA you should TOTALLY come because there's some AMAZING work that's going to be in this show. Plus, I'm sure they will have food. These sort of things always have food.

MY PLUSH IS IN AN ART SHOW. WAAAAAAA~~~

And somewhere in there... somewhere between all the east/west/mountain time zone changes... I need to make all the other stuff I need to make for Sakuracon.

NOTHING CAN POSSIBLY GO WRONG. I just won't have time for it. Commissions are closed 'til further notice. If you have something active with me, there might be delays, though I'm trying to get everything done before I leave on the first trip.

Seeking Artists for Otakon Dealer's Booth Split

EDIT: Well, nevermind. The dealer's room is waitlist now. *sigh*

Otakon's introduced some new Art Alley rules that are a bit odd, to say the least. For a few years they have had a 50/50 rule for fanart and original art which means at least half of your table has to be original work and the other half can be fanart. As you can imagine, this is rather difficult to enforce because 1) it's almost impossible to know all fandoms, 2) there are gray areas, and 3) there are a lot of freakin' artists in the Otakon AA.

This year there are some new rules to 'help' with this problem. It sounds like they were planning on banning artists from using portfolios to sell their flat art. For those not super familiar with artist allies: usually artists with 2D work will have a binder or two out on the table that you can flip through and then tell them which prints or drawings you want to buy.

Binders make the 50/50 rule pretty hard to enforce because the AA staff would have to flip through all the art on all the tables to make sure people are in compliance with the rule. It sounds like they considered banning binders altogether (I assume to "help" with this problem), but the artists who were involved in these rule discussions (whoever they are, I don't know) settled on a compromise in which artists can have binders on the table for display only. Meaning that the things in the binders could not be sold and were only there to serve as a showcase of talent.

Besides the fact that this is totally unfair to 2d/print artists by taking away a paid portion of their table on which sellable merchandise can appear, it's also an example of the staff treating the symptoms instead of the problem. I won't get into my rant about the 50/50 rule, but I will say that if you are having trouble enforcing a rule or policy, it might be worth reconsidering the policy altogether.

All that aside, I don't typically sell a lot of prints; I'm moving away from prints in general. However, I do sell some of my 2D hand drawn art on paper and that is also subject to these rules. I don't have a display that goes overhead, nor do I wish to carry one around with me from convention to convention. This all but makes it impossible for me to display my 2D work on the space provided. In addition to this inconvenience, they've eliminated any type of "giveaway" (though it's not clear yet if that includes freebees or promotional materials like cards and brochures). Usually at Otakon I hold a raffle for a plush of any character and it's always a huge hit. Not being able to hold this raffle is a big disappointment to me and the people who buy tickets every year. It will also significantly impact my ability to afford the trip.

For all these reasons, I am considering moving to the Dealer's Room. A Dealer's Booth is quite a bit more expensive, but if I split it with two other artists, it brings the price down to around $100 more than an AA Table with badge would cost. The booth only comes with one table and two chairs. Since I'm flying, I will not be able to bring large display stuff with me. For that reason, I'm looking for artists who will be able to bring their own display supplies. If absolutely needed, I may be able to use one of my checked items as a folding table, though I'd like to avoid it if possible.

If any Otakon artists are interested in this proposition, please let me know. Whoever goes in on this with me would be expected to front their portion of the money for the booth. If I can't find any artists to do this with me, I will still be applying for the lottery to get an alley table. If I get in, I will just have to figure out some new plan for displaying flat work.

First, sorry again for the journal spam the other day with the commission updates. I really wanted to space out the info a bit more and that was the best way to do it and keep it organized. ^__^; Thanks for bearing with me.

I am going to be changing my DA name. I am still narrowing it down but no matter what I change it to, it's still going to be Sakky-something. There might not be a dash anymore though. I've decided that sakky-attack (as fun as it is to listen to `jademacalla call me "sakky-attacky") just does not suit who I am. I don't even think I was thinking much when I made it, it just sounded kind of catchy probably.

I have like 1000 business cards that say 'sakky-attack' but I know DA will redirect people so I think it will be fine.

I think I will make the change on January 21st. That's the 7 year anniversary of my opening the account.

Here's my top picks so far:
SakkySa or sakkysa (Pros: this is what ~merelei calls me, and I like it because Sarah is my real name so it kind of adds part of that and sounds cute; Cons: none really that I can think of...)
Sakkypants or sakky-pants (Pros: feels a little similar to current name but -pants is more me than -attack; cons: I might not like the whole -pants thing eventually, though I can always change it again)
Sakkyla (Pros: I like ; Cons: I guess it looks kinda weird...)

INFORMATION & PRICING

Character reference sheet - $35

Reference sheets include a front and back view of the character as well as detailed close ups of items or accessories. I use the same base for each sheet unless you tell me that you need a custom body style. They are hand drawn line art that is digitally colored with flat colors. These sheets are delivered electronically, meaning you will not get the original in the mail as you do with my other commissions. However, you can opt to pay additional shipping if you want the line art sent to you.

Sakky's Plush Adoptions

Current Base Prices (subject to complexity):

Small plush (approx. 7"-8") - $75
Large plush (approx. 16"-18") - $150 (limited characters available)

Please include references or detail descriptions of the character you would like when contacting me for plushie adoptions. If it something I think I can make, we discuss and decide on a final adoption price.

When adopting from me, please keep in mind that these are for display only; they are hand sewn and made (usually) of felt. They are collector's items and not intended to be used or purchased as children's toys. If you treat your plushie roughly (or over-love it) there will be consequences to its appearance! You must be 13 or older to adopt or purchase a custom plushie. Because they are (usually) made of felt and hand made, they cannot be washed and should be handled with care. They come from a home with cats and those cats tend to sleep in the fabric, so if you are allergic please let me know in advance so I can limit kitty exposure.

I can make plushies out of fabric other than felt but the price will go up based on the type of material you want. Just let me know if you want this option and I will get a quote for you.

1) If you are interested in a plushie, please let me know so I can give you a quote. I will then put you on the Ordered Wait List.

2) When space becomes available, I will ask for a $20 non-refundable deposit from you in order to move you onto the On Deck list. Typically there will only be 1 or 2 plushies On Deck. If you are unable to make the non-refundable deposit at that time, you will move to the bottom of the current Ordered Wait List.

3) When I am close to completing a plush I will contact the next On Deck commission for final payment. That will move your plush into Active status. If you fail to make your full payment within two (2) weeks of the request, I will consider your adoption to be abandoned and I will cancel it. You will not get your deposit back. If you still want the plushie you will have to get back in line in the Ordered Wait List and wait for another chance to make a non-refundable deposit to secure a new spot On Deck.

You can follow the general progress of your new adoption on this page. Once I finish the plushie I will ship it to you. I will also post a picture up in my gallery so you can see the result before it arrives.

These are base prices subject to character complexity. I am also available for digital art; please contact me for rates if you are interested. All other combination images would be decided on a case by case basis (i.e. something like group bust shots, two half body characters, etc.) so please let me know what you have in mind. I can work with your budget!

COMMISSION PROCESS

When you contact me for an drawing commission, please include example images or descriptions of the characters or setting involved. We will discuss the details and decide on a final price. All prices are subject to complexity of the character(s). You will then be put onto the Ordered Wait List.

Full payment is due before I begin the commission. When you make the payment you will be moved from the Ordered Wait List to the On Deck list. Your commission will become Active when I begin the sketch.

I will contact you with a sketch for approval before I ink and color. This is the only time when major changes to the design or composition can be made. You can follow the general progress of your commission on this page. When the commission is done, I will mail you the final drawing in a cardboard supported envelope. Full body images are about (but not exactly) 8" x 10". If you need an exact size please let me know. If the image is colored digitally, I will send you the original line art, a signed color print of digital version, and a hi-res copy of the final file. I can also provide a high resolution scan of traditional art - please let me know if this is an option you'd like.

I retain the right to use your drawing commissions as the basis for print sales if the work is solely of canon characters. You have the choice to opt out of this, just let me know.

UPDATE: Today is the LAST DAY to post your part of the exchange! Everyone's done really well, let's pull together to make sure this is a success! SERENITY IS COUNTING ON YOU!

If you are definitely going to post but might be a few days late please TELL ME TODAY.

You can post the artwork any time between now and the end of the year! This is not specifically a holiday or Christmas exchange so there's no special date to post (just a deadline). See the art as it comes in HERE!

Secret Sailor Exchange is an art gift event for fans of Sailormoon who have their own fan characters. You submit your characters to be drawn by someone and in exchange, you draw someone's character. No one knows who will be making their art and everyone gets something special!

Please choose characters that already have clear, color reference images from which your exchange partner can easily work.

This exchange is for Sailor Senshi only; please no other Sailormoon OCs like villains or knights. All this means is that they must have "Sailor" in their name; there's no requirement for what kind of outfit they are wearing.

Yes, images have to be colored. Yes, it has to be full body. This is so that everyone is getting similar art as what they are making. It's okay to use a chibi style, bases, etc. so long as it shows the full character and has color.

PARTICIPATING IN THIS EXCHANGE MEANS THAT YOU MUST MAKE ART FOR SOMEONE IN ORDER TO GET ART IN RETURN. I'm An Artist Now! YAY!

Today was my last day at my full time job. I am now embarking on a new journey!

I don't know for how long I will be able to "be an artist" but since it's always been a dream of mine, I am pretty excited about it! And it seems I have a lot to do! I guess now I just have to see how it goes.

Starting tomorrow I am going to be making art full time. I have updated my LiveStream journal to reflect my new schedule which will be every Monday through Friday from 11AM-7PM Eastern.  I'll likely be working on things outside of that time frame, but I'm going to stream at least those hours every day as a way to make myself accountable.

As noted on that page, I will not be making new journal posts for those streams since they are scheduled.  However, I will be posting notes on that page if I will not be there as planned, such as this Friday and Monday when I will be traveling to Tampa, FL to do my *SenshiStock shoot with `jademacalla.  I will still post new update LS journals for streams that are not scheduled (like on weekends).  I may end up adjusting the schedule as I go since this whole thing is new to me.

I have no idea if this is really going to work.  I have to work hard enough and fast enough to make enough money to replace at least part of the full time pay I was taking home.  Basically, I have to make enough money that husband (the household financial planner!) says 'okay, you are making enough money to have this as your job.'  I also do not know for how long demand will last (but I am so grateful and excited that so many people are interested in plushies, thank you so much

). It may be that I cannot make art fast enough to make enough money for the household. If that's the case, I may have to look for something part time to help supplement. I'd like to make art more of a part of my daily working life, so I want to try and avoid going full time in a non-art related job.

Anyway, I'm super excited about this chance and I plan to work really hard. You guys are awesome and you've already put a lot on my plate so I am going to do my best to meet everyone's expectations!!

Today I sent out notification for item commissions to people who were on the mailing list. After a week, I will be opening up items to everyone. Please keep an eye on my Commissions Journal for all the details.

Now, since I am no longer going to be among the gainfully employed at the end of the month, I have decided to take this opportunity to try and pursue a bit of a dream and JUST MAKE ART ALL THE TIME.

Plush Adoptions

The people who were on my Wait List from the 2012 summer opening are getting first dibs on commission slots. They have already been asked to make a deposit by the end of the month to secure their place in line.

Instead of having a calendar order for plushies, I am changing to a graduated system. If you are interested in a plushie, I take your name and put it onto the Ordered Wait List in the order you've contacted me. When space becomes available, I will ask for a deposit from you in order to move you onto the On Deck list.  Typically there will only be 1 or 2 plushies On Deck..  When I am close to completing a plush I will contact the next On Deck person for final payment. That will move your plushie into Active status and I will begin work.

If you fail to make your full payment within two (2) weeks of my request, I will consider your adoption to be abandoned and I will cancel it.  You will not get your deposit back.  If you still want the plushie you will have to get back in line in the Ordered Wait List and wait for another chance to make a non-refundable deposit to secure a new spot On Deck.

Drawing Commissions

Drawing commissions are going to work in a similar way. Those people who were on my old Priority List are going to get first dibs on slots. I will now be requiring full payment before I start a commission. Anyone can be on the Ordered Wait List, making a payment moves you to On Deck. I may close the On Deck slots if I start to get too behind. Your commission will progress into Active status as I begin work on it. I will still be contacting you for sketch approvals.

There are still separate lists for chibi drawings and other types of drawing.

Item Commissions

Item commissions are going to change the same way, but not yet. For now they are remaining closed.

Joining the Ranks of the Woefully Unemployed

Today I got the news that the game dev studio that both I and my husband work for is closing. His last day is the 15th and they are keeping me on until the end of the month to help with the odds and ends of everything.  We're both getting an alright severance package and his vacation was maxed out so we'll be getting that, too.  Financially, we'll be okay. We have savings and we both have marketable skills that we can use to make money if we need to (art for me, web dev for him).  This is certainly not what I would call convenient, but I am seeing it as an opportunity for both of us.  I'm far too lazy to quit my job to try something new.  But in this case, the choice wasn't mine and I'm thrust into a new world of possibilities.

What do I want to do?  Well, I can do whatever I want. My husband and I have both decided that we do want to take some time off.  He is a very talented artist and I have no doubt that people will be seeking his skills soon.  I'm a little less marketable and I don't really have a career passion or anything that I really want to do that doesn't require additional schooling. I've thought about going back to school and it is certainly something I'm considering even more strongly now.

That being said, I'm not sure what else I will be up to in the next few months. I have AAC in a few weeks and then nothing really planned until Anime Boston in May 2013. In the meantime, if I'm not working any FT job, I might try doing some more art commissions, making more plushies, maybe looking for more conventions to go to.  It might be fun to make art for a while and see how it goes.

I guess right now I'm about 85% excited, 10% concerned and 5% meh.

I just can't believe I actually have to keep going to work for another  4 weeks.

Man that is so lame!

GLORY FUNDRAISER BOX

In 2007, Sara Baker - AKA Glory - was in a car accident which left her 'locked in.' This condition means that she is a quadriplegic. Though she is unable to use her arms and legs, her body still allows her to feel all over and she retains all of her mental functionality.

Sara and her mom live together in CA where her mom cares for her at home with some assistance from home care nurses. I've run a few fund raisers for her in the past and donations are always very helpful with Sara's day to day care.
